Why Most Africans Make Bad Decisions — And How to Stop

The Real Problem Is Not Information

You have access to Google. You have access to WhatsApp groups full of advice. You have friends who have been through similar situations. And yet, you still feel stuck.

The problem is not that you lack information. The problem is that you have too much of it — and no structure to process it.

This is the core insight behind the BACE (BLANKSON-AMISSAH Cognitive Engine) framework. Most people do not fail because they are uninformed. They fail because they cannot separate the important from the urgent, the real from the imagined, and the reversible from the irreversible.

The African Decision Context Is Unique

Decision-making tools developed in the West were built for Western contexts. They assume:

  • You have stable income
  • Your family will not pressure you into a different choice
  • You can afford to fail and try again
  • You have access to credit and insurance

None of these assumptions hold consistently in the African context. A decision that is "rational" in New York can be catastrophic in Kumasi.

This is why BAIC exists. We build decision intelligence tools specifically for people navigating the African economic and social environment — where the stakes are higher, the safety nets are thinner, and the relational pressures are stronger.

The Five Gates That Change Everything

The BACE framework filters every major decision through five critical gates:

**Gate 1: Reality Check** Is the capital available without risking your survival? This is not about whether you *can* find the money. It is about whether losing it would destroy you.

**Gate 2: Self-Interest Scan** Does this decision protect your downside or increase your upside? Most people only think about upside. The BACE framework demands you account for both.

**Gate 3: Entropy Test** How much chaos will this introduce into your life? Every decision creates ripple effects. A business loan does not just affect your finances — it affects your sleep, your relationships, your health, and your focus.

**Gate 4: Leverage Check** Are you using your resources effectively? Are you doing this because it is the best use of your time, money, and energy — or because it is familiar?

**Gate 5: Identity Alignment** Does this serve your long-term goals? Not your short-term desires. Not what your family expects. Your actual long-term goals.

The Decision Threshold

If 4 out of 5 gates pass: **GO**.

If fewer than 4 pass: **RECALIBRATE** or **ABORT**.

This is not a formula. It is a discipline. It forces you to slow down at the exact moment when your emotions are telling you to speed up.

What Happens When You Apply This

One of our clients — a tech founder in Lagos — came to us with a plan to take a $40,000 loan to expand his business. He had the opportunity. He had the enthusiasm. He had the plan.

He passed 2 out of 5 gates.

We told him to recalibrate. He was frustrated. Six months later, the market conditions he was betting on collapsed. He thanked us.

Another client — a director in Accra — came to us not knowing what decision to make. She had all the information. What she lacked was structure. After a single BACE session, she had a clear path forward. She now uses the framework for every major decision she faces.

You are reading this because you have a decision in front of you. Maybe it is a business opportunity. Maybe it is a career change. Maybe it is a relationship or a financial commitment.

Before you decide, ask yourself: have you run it through the five gates?

If you have not, you are not making a decision. You are making a guess.

**BAIC exists to help you stop guessing.**

[Book a session](/booking) and let us run your decision through the full BACE framework. You will walk away with a Command Brief — a structured, written analysis of your decision — that you can act on with confidence.
